Severe Itching and Skin Irritation?

I have a 11 month old Alaskan Malamute/Shephard mix that I got from the local shelter 2 months ago. Recently he's started itching badly and his skin is all scaley. I know this is the season for sheding and I always check him for fleas. I spoke to a groomer and he said to bathe him in a tea tree oil and aloe shampoo and it works the day I bathe him but after that he's right back to itching and biting at himself, he's loosing a signifigant amount of hair around his back legs and his bum area. Any help greatly appreciated

Severe Itching and Skin Irritation?
Take the dog to the vet. It can be a simple allergy and will need the antihistamine hydroxyzine (it works better then benadryl on dogs), possibly a short term dose of prednisone or a seasonal cortisone shot. It could be a skin infection in which it will need a short term course of antibiotics and a special medicated shampoo. I am a pharmacist and owner of 3 long haired Shih Tzus and have gone through this a few times.
Reply:take him to the vet he may be allergic to something and the vet can give him something to relieve the itching and dryness good luck
Reply:at your local pet supply store they make a hydrocortizone spray ,it works great
Reply:Benadryl, it sounds like an allergy
Reply:You could also try adding fish oil to his food. That might help if it has dry skin.

Good Luck
Reply:just had the same problem. i gave my beagle a 1/2 teaspoon of benadryl and then took her to the vet yesterday. he gave me prednisone and derm ease. the derm ease has fish oil and other oils that help the skin. i also bathe her with head and shoulders shampoo that has an ingredient for itching. my vet said this was ok or i wouldn't be doing it. it seems to give her relief.
Reply:I gave this info. to another answers user, maybe it will help you out.

I work in a grooming salon as a new groomer. My sister also is a groomer there, now for over a year, her standard poodle (now 11 months) was on Cephalexin for a month and there was no change in her skin. She has bad allergies and was always chewing on her skin which would then result in hair loss.

My sister and our boss purchased a product in Hershey, PA at the Grooming Expo and it has changed all our our dogs health for the better. Below is the link:

Working for a vet, you've probably heard of the Norwegian Kelp. The poodle has stopped chewing and itching and her hair is now growing back (just in time for this years competitions!) and we are all sold, as we all use it now.

Also, my boss has an adult standard poodle (9 yrs) that has had allergies all his life and been on and off Cephalexin shots most of it. Since he's been on the kelp he has completely stopped taking the shots!

You need to know that it will most likely take two months before you could see a change, but be patient, we are firm believers of this stuff and sell it in the shop.

It helps reduce stress, dry skin and allergies, reduces shedding and improves condition of coat, reduces pain from arthritis, restores pigmentation, balances thyroid, aids digestion and great tasting.

I know your dog has different symtoms but sounds like allergies and it wouldn't hurt to try anything after the poor thing has suffered this much. Hope this helps out some!"
