My dermatologist gave me an acne cream which ive only used twice but my skin has gone really red, dry and sore. Do you have any ideas what I can do to reduce the redness and make it less dry as at the moment I cant even put make up over it because its too dry.. I don't want to use moisturiser on it as putting creams on it makes it sore and I'm scared it will further irritate it. I can't call my dermotologist as its 2 in the morning..
Thank you
Skin irritation due to acne cream, what can i do to soothe it?
First, I would use something gentle like Lubraderm for cleansing and be sure to rinse it all off. To settle your sore, tender skin, see if you can find a product called Cutemol. It is a cream but if you use it sparingly, it should not bother you. I have rosacea and use it all the time but I use very little and after applying, I place a warm face cloth over it, and then wipe off any excess.
You can also try a mild cortisone gel (not cream or ointment so it does not further aggravate your acne). Some people have good luck with a pure 100% aloe gel also, like you would use for sunburn, or slice open a leaf of aloe and apply the gel as you would to a kitchen burn. Test on a small area first.
You can use a moisturizer that is oil free and non-comedogenic (did I spell that correcly?) like Neutrogena oil-free.
Something else that works for me when my skin is really irritated, is to brew a cup of tea, take out the tea bag and let it cool. Then lay it on the sore areas on your face. The tannic acid in the tea can help sooth irritated skin and even works for sunburn.
Stay away from the makeup for now. If you feel you need something, I would try only a very gentle face powder like Cover Girl and apply very lightly, no foundation as it will just serve to irritate more and requires more effort to get it off.
At the very least, try placing cool wash cloths on the sore areas. While the skin is still moist, apply an oil-free moisturizer, or the Cutemol I mention above, Let it sit a minute and then apply another cloth to remove the excess.
Good luck. I know how this feels. I am 60 years old and still have to tackle the rosacea and how sore it makes my skin at times. I never had acne, thank God and good genes, but now at this age, I have the world's most sensitive skin.
Reply:you really need to moisturize it or else it's going to get worse. You could be having a reaction to the cream. You could be putting too much on your face at a time since you've only used it twice. I recommend neutrogena or eucerin - both are pretty face friendly.
Reply:you rake an a coco buter water and acne medicine, bengay and mix it and rub it
Reply:Splash your face with cool lightly salted water.
If you have any witch hazel - apply that - it is very soothing.
I don't suppose you have any chamomile tea there? Make some up and cool it and use that on your skin - it is not only a mind calmative but also good for skin. The absolute best thing for badly irritated skin though is calendula - and as it is entirely the wrong time of year I don't suppose you'd have any of that hanging around to be made into a lotion!
Reply:try green tea it should sooth it just let it cool before putting it on your face.
Reply:Do not put any more acne cream on as it dries the skin and this is what has probably happened. It has done this to me just before a big party before. Just use aqueous cream on your face to soothe the dryness but don't used a fragrance moisturizer as this will irritate it further. After a day or so the swelling with have subsided. Use something like E4 or just a plain aqueous cream. If you have any zinc and Castor oil that should be O.k because it is used on babies with nappy rash and shouldn't irritate your skin. Drink plenty of purified water too.
Reply:I would suggest you discontinue use immediately.
